When Andrew Jackson RATTS was born on February 17, 1810, in Rowan County, North Carolina, his father, Henry, was 39 and his mother, Barbara, was 40. He married Celia WRIGHT on September 16, 1829, in Washington County, Indiana. They had two children during their marriage. He died on March 15, 1847, in Jackson, Indiana, at the age of 37, and was buried in Blue River, Wisconsin. Considered a member of the Society of Pioneer Founders of Indiana. Cela and Andrew Ratts settled next to her parents and eventually moved to Salem, where they built a two-story white house, one of the first of its type in Salem. They were prominent in the governance of Salem, Indiana, in its earliest year. Cela and Andrew were parents of 12 children and Andrew was very successful in business as he gave each of his children a farm. They were members of the Church of Christ at Blue River, Washington County, Indiana, and are buried in the Blue River Cemetery. Tavern on the Square which has been owned and operated by some member of Andrew's line for more than 100 years. It was first started as a Tavern and Livery Stable in a site about one block south of it's present location. In the 1920's the land arid building on the Square was purchased and renovated. It is owned and operated now by Harold Ratts (Slim).

1808 Philbert and Molly Sears Wright moved to Clark's Grass, Indiana Territory, in 1808 with their family. Philbert Wright made one crop there and then moved to northern Harrison County. This area became Washington Township, Washington County, Indiana. He purchased land there and settled three miles south of Salem, Indiana where he and his wife spent the remainder of their days. During the War of 1812 when the Indians were hostile, he built a blockhouse on the branch near his house where families of the neighborhood could go for protection from an Indian raid.
